Artist Spotlight V.5 (SWV - Sisters With Voices 1992-2012)

It is hard to believe that it has been 20 years since SWV stepped onto the scene with their new style of R&B. Not only was it soulful, but it was rough, sensual & smooth all at the same time. Taj, Lee Lee and Coko, all from Brooklyn came in with three part harmony that captivated millions across the globe. With three highly successful albums under their belt, the called it quits in 1997 and went their separate ways, only to reunite occasionally to tour. 15 years later, they are back with a hot single "Co-Sign" and it is burning up the charts as we speak. As such, I thought that it was long overdue to do a mix that would spotlight their enormous catalog. I hope that you all enjoy. Long live SWV!!!!

Champaign Soul/So Soulistic Meets Mr. Larry Levan!!!!

In the short years of decadence, the late 70's and early 80's saw a transformation in politics, fashion, the economy and music. You saw on live television a massive display of hatred toward disco at the infamous DISCO SUCKS outing where thousands of disco records were set aflame. Sadly enough, this was also around the time we lost greats like Bob Marley & John Lennon. Through it all, emerged a melodious brand of music that actually had no label...well maybe GOOD MUSIC. This music was spun all across the radio waves by many disc jockeys such as Frankie Crocker, Donnie Simpson, Tom Joyner and DJ Red Alert. On the underground scene, there was a even more vibrant manifestation of love toward this kind of music brought to many by the late, great Larry Levan. Larry Levan was a staple in the New York community as the resident DJ at the Paradise Garage (home of Sylvester, Loletta Hathaway & even Madonna). Larry would blend different genres of music to an eager crowd of all races and sexualities. Larry was also known for his great sound system that carried his melodies to the masses. Unfortunately, his life was cut short in 1992, due to a heart attack.

To celebrate his legacy, I have pieced together some of the songs that I think he would have played back in the day. It is a combination of R&B, Soul, House, Disco & 80's grooves. So without any further delay, please sit back and enjoy the sounds that are about to come through your speakers.

SIMPLY WHITNEY!!!

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time.[1] Her awards include two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards in her lifetime. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.[2][3] Houston began singing with her New Jersey church's junior gospel choir at age 11.[4] After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.

On February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead in her guest room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, of causes not immediately known.[10] News of her death, the day before the 2012 Grammy Awards, dominated American and international media, especially cable news.

February has been a very depressing month as we lost yet another musical icon. First, Don Cornelius, then David Peaston and now Whitney Houston.

I dedicate this mix to all of you have requested this particular podcast, Bobby Brown, Bobbi Chistina Brown, Cissy Houston, Dionne Warrick & to all of Whitney's friends and family worldwide.

Let's celebrate her musical legacy.

RIP Whitney!!!

<itunes:summary>Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model.

RIP Whitney!!!</itunes:summary>

Don Cornelius R.I.P. (The Father of Soul Train)

It was earlier today when I got the text from my classmate, Nate, that the great, Don Cornelius had committed suicide and passed away. Right at that moment, I felt a great depression enter my body as I began to realize that another musical icon had passed. I began to text all of my music friends as their reaction was quite the same.

I say all of that to say that this man had a great impact on not just the musical culture, but the way people carried themselves in day-to-day life. His amazing show, Soul Train (1971-2006) influenced so many generations of people and races. His show was a shining example of how music did not see any particular color and that it was the one form of entertainment that could bring so many people together.

What you all are about to hear is one of my favorite episodes from January 1980. It featured a young group called the S.O.S. Band and a then plateauing artist by the name of Rick James. It was not just the groups that the show had guest appear on here, but it was the time at which the episode aired on WGN. It was early June 2007 and my friends and I had just gotten in from shopping in Little Five Points Atlanta and were getting ready for a concert at the Apache Cafe. We were just changing channels and viola, there was Soul Train. We all instantaneously were glued to the tv with so much excitement because we all were reliving our youths when we used to religously watch Soul Train early Saturday mornings when we were all young. From that point, I recorded every episode that came on and still watch the re-runs to this day.

This particular version you will hear is my updated version of that particular episode with original interviews. So, for the next hour, enjoy and reminisce back on when you were glued to the television trying to learn all of the new dance steps and lip-syncing all of the songs. Most importantly, celebrate this great man's legacy.

Wishing you all LOVE, PEACE & SOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

RIP Don Cornelius.

Hope that all is well. Essentially, the last 6 weeks have been a grind with school. As such, a brother has been UNDERGROUND getting his study on...so to speak. At any rate, what started out as a friendly game of "who sampled that?" with my homeys on facebook, turned into me wanting to go ahead and put this mix together. What you are about to hear are the original songs that were sampled by many of our favorite artists in R&B & Hip-Hop. So, for the next 30 minutes, see if you can name the song that sampled this classics. Enjoy!!!

P.S. Shout out to Steve Foster, Nolin Patin, Daremy Butler, Clinton Pullen, Bert Gurley & Carlos McClain.

1) Intro - A Garden of Piece - Lonnie Liston Smith
2) Mestizo Eyes - Bobbi Humphrey

4) Hurry Up This Way Again - The Stylistics
5) You're Gonna Need Me - Dionne Warrick
6) Thoughts of An Old Flame - Pleasure

Heavy D, born Dwight Arrington Myers, was one of the most influential rappers of the 1990s. He was the leader of the hip-hop trio Heavy D & the Boyz, which gained mainstream fame for the theme song for the TV show “In Living Color.” (The song was first “In Living Color,” Heavy D & the Boyz later recorded a new theme, “Cause That’s the Way You Livin’ When You’re in Living Color.”) Heavy D also rapped on Michael Jackson’s “Jam” and Janet Jackson’s “Alright.”

In recent years, Heavy D focused more on TV and movie appearances. He made a cameo in Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller’s new film, “Tower Heist.” Heavy D performed at October’s BET Awards, his first live performance in 15 years.

In pop culture, Heavy D is also remembered for his mention in the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1994 hit single “Juicy” with the lyric “Salt’n'Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine.”

Heavy D was on the brink of a comeback as he performed on the BET Hip-Hop Awards two weeks ago.

Heavy D., you will really be missed.

Rest In Peace my Brother!!!

The conversation seemed to be more pessimistic if anything. However, the conversation took a positive turn when we started talking about producers that are sticking to the script, but still creating beautiful music. Point is, the internet has been a wonderful tool to discover wonderful music produced by unknown and known producers. These producers have been the driving force behind my beats and served as inspiration to keep doing what we do. If it were not for my producing brethren, I would have probably given up on music, but thank GOD for my peers!!!
